20(1) 2012: Twentieth Anniversary Issue of the Medical Law Review

The first issue of 20th volume of the Medical Law Review is a special issue in honour of Professor Margaret Brazier to mark both her retirement from her role as the Editor-in-Chief in 2010 and the twentieth anniversary of the journal. In recognition of Professor Brazier’s invaluable contribution to the field of health care law and her seven year editorship of the Medical Law Review, the papers in this issue consider some of her published pieces, exploring the wide influence of her work and the ways in which her arguments/ideas have been taken forward.

The lecture, entitled 'Palliative Care: an Ethical and Legal Duty?' will be given by Professor John Keown, of Georgetown University, Washington, DC.
John Keown holds the Rose F. Kennedy Chair in Christian Ethics in the Kennedy Institute of Ethics at Georgetown University, Washington DC. Having graduated in law from Cambridge he took a doctorate at Oxford. He was appointed to a lectureship in law in the University of Leicester, and then in the University of Cambridge, where he held fellowships at Queens' College and Churchill College. His research has been cited by bodies including the United States Supreme Court and the Law Lords. Last year he testified as an expert witness for the Attorney-General of Canada in a case concerning the constitutionality of Canada's prohibition of euthanasia and assisting suicide. The most recent of his five books is The Law and Ethics of Medicine (2012), published by Oxford University Press. He has also written a play based on the trial of Dr Leonard Arthur in Leicester in 1981. He is currently working on two book projects, a festschrift in honour of John Finnis, to be published by Oxford University Press, and a book questioning the justice of America's War for Independence.'
